Louise Phillips -Author Bio

Born in Dublin, Louise Phillips began writing in 2006 when her youngest son turned thirteen.

Since then she has been published as part of many anthologies, including County Lines from New Island, and various literary journals.  Louise won the Jonathan Swift Award for her short story 'Last Kiss', and was a winner in the Irish Writers’ Centre Lonely Voice Platform, short-listed for the Molly Keane Memorial Award, Bridport UK, and long-listed twice for RTE Guide/Penguin short story competition.

Louise’s psychological crime novel, Red Ribbons, will be published by Hachette Books Ireland in September 2012, and her second novel, The Doll’s House, will be published in 2013.
Launching this new voice in crime, Ciara Doorley, Editorial Director of Hachette Books Ireland, says of Louise. ‘With overtones of Sophie Hannah and Tana French, Louise is a supremely talented writer. She subconsciously creates parallels between her characters, and this really challenges the reader. Her writing is tense, atmospheric and we’re really excited to be launching a new voice in Irish crime.’
Red Ribbons centres round the abduction and murder of a twelve-year old school girl and the main character Kate Pearson, criminal psychologist, who is drafted in by the police to help them find the killer.

Reviews

Jack Harte (Chairman of the Irish Writers Centre) on ‘Hello’ - “This story visits an all too familiar tragedy of the Ireland of not so long ago.  The savagery of a society dominated by a callous theocracy has been well exposed by now.  However this story does not engage in polemics or even righteous indignation.  It quietly enters the world of the protagonist and illuminates the tragedy within.  It is all the more powerful for that, leaving the reader to share and enjoy the possibility of hope that emerges from the situation.”

Paul Howard - (Ross O’Carroll Kelly) -Adjudicator of the News Four Short Story Competition), on her short story ‘The Two of Us’ - A beautiful, perfectly pitched and heart-rending account of the role reversal between parent and child brought about by ageing.”
